Genoa - Italy

Genoa’s metro network currently consists of a single metro line with 8 stations, serving an estimated 400,000 passengers daily and transporting over 100 million passengers annually. The city’s public transportation system, managed by AMT, is undergoing significant transformation. This system includes not only the metro but also 139 bus lines, 15 public lifts, three funiculars, one railway, and a boat service.

On the one hand, a new commercial policy has been introduced, offering unlimited free metro rides to residents of the metropolitan area of Genova to encourage the use of public transport. On the other hand, a major infrastructural plan is being implemented. This plan aims to more than double the metro network’s length, introduce a second metro line, and integrate three crucial new areas of the city into the system.

The infrastructural plan is multi-faceted, with various segments at different stages of development—some are currently under construction, others have secured funding, and some are in the design phase. This comprehensive transformation will ultimately result in a renewed metro system, becoming a central component of the city’s transportation network.

In this dynamic environment, NEXUS will test and validate its research and methodologies. This includes utilizing simulation tools, developing dynamic passenger profiles, testing the efficiency of new operational guidelines, and confirming the potential of AI within a real-world metro system.

This use case presents a valuable opportunity for the Genova metro network and its current and future passengers. As the metro undergoes physical transformation, a corresponding technological evolution is essential to create a truly innovative system. The advancements introduced by NEXUS can enhance the travel experience for passengers, improving public service quality. Together with commercial and infrastructural initiatives, technology will play a crucial role in reshaping the Genova metro network.
